Do Christians help the poor and needy?
81This hub may end up short on words, but for this one the hubscore does not matter, what matters is that you, the reader pay attention and watch the videos presented here, for they may change a life, possibly yours, hopefully a child's as well.
Constant drip drip insinuation in the forums played a part in producing this hub, for it seems that the atheists greatest delight is in trying to distract believers from real debate and fellowship by taunts and wise crack remarks about why God does not feed the starving in....... (insert your country of choice).
Listen up you scoffers and murmurers, God DOES care for those in need, you just are too blind to see where and how He works, because you choose to sit in the comfort of your home and spend your time spewing venom and moaning from a computer, rather than get out there to take God into the places where people need help.
The murmurers always refer to the starving millions, but the reality is that a human being can have all the food in the world, but if they have not been set free from their spiritual poverty, they have nothing.
Like the old saying goes, give a man a fish and you feed him for a day, teach him how to fish and you feed him for life.
So, maybe this will be part of a series where we explore what God is doing through His people and what is being accomplishing, through ordinary believers..... the thing that the secular world has shown it is incapable of doing.... giving hope and encouragement to the lost and lonely, and setting them free from the chains that bind them.
Bill Wilson runs Metro Ministries from NYC and cares for about 40,000 disadvantaged children in New York, the Phillipines, Romania, South Africa, Ukraine, Bulgaria & Moldova and now just starting in India.
He started this work 30 years ago, and still lives in Brooklyn amongst the children Metro care for, and drives a bus to collect kids every Saturday to take them to Sunday School......
His low paid full time, and paying volunteer staff do visitation to the homes of these children on a regular basis, and for most of those visited it's the only care and love they are shown in their week.
So this seemed like a good place to start, for he is the real thing.
The video above addresses the main complaint against believers..... we are too complacent, and having found our faith, and reached an understanding of scripture that we have accepted as 'gospel' then tell people about it, rather than putting it into action.
Bill's right, a testimony from a former druggie or prostitute, or other human being whose life had taken a wrong course, but is now devoted to bringing the liberty of Christ's message to other hurting humans, is more compelling and able to set people free than a polished sermon.
Part of this problem is that God does not have any grandchildren, for each believer needs to come to faith and find God alone.
Yet when we are in faith, when our lives have changed, then our progeny are more 'protected' than we were, and having been raised in a 'Christian home' are less able to speak from experience when they tell someone 'Christ can set you free'.
Does that mean we should abandon our children to depravity in order that they may present the gospel better when they have been rescued from their sins.... God forbid!
But it does seem to indicate that the real focus of the body of believers should be reaching the lost, the truly lost, and bringing them not just to the safe haven of Christ's teachings, but also assisting them in taking their testimony to others, rather than encouraging them to become good church members, who think they retain their righteousness by obeying all the rules.
The words of Christ tell us that we are to focus on those who need release, to set the captives free, rather than those who are comfortable in their modicum of sin.
We are to love the sinner.
Do we truly do that?
OK, if you watched that last video it was for a little light relief, but it shows the multitude of children who are born into dire situations, right in the middle of NYC, just across a bridge that leads to prosperity, but which many never get to cross.
These children have bleak prospects as it stands, you don't need to go to Africa to help the poor and needy, they are on your doorstep...... well maybe not on your affluent doorstep, but if you live in Manhattan they are not far away, and wherever you live, if you will just take a short trip the the 'bad' side of town, they will be waiting for you... waiting for Christ to manifest in a human form and set them free from the cycle of drudgery that persuades young minds that there is no escape from their plight.
So if you are really wanting to help, go to the people who need help, take them the gospel message by your actions, show them Gods love by serving them as Christ did, by freeing them as Christ did, by becoming more Christ like in their lives.
You cannot do that?
Christ understood that also, but if you cannot go, provide the support for those who can and do go into the worst places on the planet and surrender all to serve those who have nothing.
Bill lives a life of faith, almost died for his faith, and stands as a testimony to Gods ability to protect those who step out in faith and trust God.
I mention this just in case you were thinking, yeah, he's ok, he has a big ministry and probably makes lots of cash from it.
You would be far from truth if you thought that, Metro is a hands on ministry where nothing is taken for granted and although God provisions it there is always more demands raised whenever they reach out to more people.
Can they save the whole world...... well not alone, but they do understand that changing the world starts by being changed yourself, then changing someone else's life, and empowering them to carry that faith and message of liberation forward.
One life at a time.

Thank you for illuminating minds about the awesome work God is doing through His children. My Christian Brothers are involved in all sorts of work for God, digging wells in Africa, building houses and roads in Haiti, doing microfinance around the world, mentoring the disadvantaged, ministering to those in prison, feeding the hungry in inner city America, et al. I've been thinking about writing a series of Hubs about some of this work that I have been personally involved in. Your Hub may provide the inspiration for me to get going on it. Thank you, John.

What a terrific message, I love your line;
“Part of this problem is that God does not have any grandchildren, for each believer needs to come to faith and find God alone.”
How true. May you affect as many people as possible with this piece; you certainly were not short on words. God Bless you, and God Bless Metro Ministries.
This is THE message the church needed to hear! I see people like Bill Wilson and it makes me shake my head in sorrow that I am not more like him. While I haven't been called into that type of ministry, it's like being ordinary in the presence of a hero that has the same tools as myself but has risen far above my performance. For several years I preached at the local mission and counseled and helped out. Even took some people into my own home and helped them get a fresh start. Then came 2 more kids and a new job. Now I just look for opportunity on the street. You have sparked my heart cry to a flame. I don't want sideline duty. I want to make a difference. Bless you dear brother!
Great job, many need to see that there are great needs, right outside our door. It is easy to not notice... but it is not the church that God will judge for the lack of heart or love, but each individual and for every word that we speak. It is interesting that when confronted with the multitude needing to be fed, Jesus said to his disciples " You feed them!". He has given each of us blessings, to give away, so we can get more to give away. There is tithing for the common Christian, then there are alms, then there is offerings, over and above. Just getting tithes into the storehouse is a task. It has always been the common denominator that 5% of the people do 95% of the work. It's time for falling on our faces and seeing a great powerful spirit of conviction to come on the church. Blessings St.L
Thank you brother John for sharing this awesome hub. My husband and I love helping the poor and needy. It is truly a blessing to reach out those who are in need. God bless you!
My video was slow also, but I needed to know this information. I am a Believer and know that Christ works for all our good. Keep writing hubs.
You heightened, my awareness! Thank you for sharing, the video coverage...(was slow for me...may be my computer.) Informative hub, agua!
Aqua - have you read Pagan Christianity? If not, you must. It's not a church bashing book, but it does talk about big church salaries and big building programs and the lack of 'real' ministry going on in our 'churches'. I was a pastor for almost fifteen years. I don't regularly attend church now, as I can't stand the dog and pony show that Sunday morning has become. Would Jesus attend our churches? Would he have attended mine? That's a question that haunts me. Taking Him to the needy is where it's at. That's what he did. Thanks for a thought-provoking hub.
Aguasilver,
Thanks for highlighting this important work.
Thank you brother John for a wonderful insight into righteous ministry. A ministry that exudes the heart of Christ for the lost and weary soul. A staunch reminder to God's people to not just talk the walk but walk the talk. Some may never be able to join a ministry like this one, but all of us are able to minister to those around us, all one needs to do is open their spiritual eyes to see the great need that is all around and be willing to give to others that which Christ so willing and freely gave to us.
As for the naysayers brother John the moment I caught wind of their shenanigans after joining about a month ago, I immediately stayed clear from their sites. I chose not to play into the scheme of the enemy, which is taking our time and energy from doing what the Lord has called each one of His children to accomplish. Debating, arguing, trying to convince the degenerate and rebellious that there is a God who is all good, all powerful, all knowing, ever existent is not our calling. Our calling is to be conformed to the image of Jesus Christ; to mature in Him so that we may do the deeds that He did during His earthly ministry and in doing so bring all the glory, honor and praise to our Father above.
Understand brother John that we do not struggle against flesh and blood, just pray for them and let it all in God's hands. After all, God only knows who will come to the saving knowledge of His grace and mercy.
God bless you in your walk to live your life for Him
I don't have enough thumbs up to give you for this John, because my carnal hands limit me to two, but this is righteously powerful! I see new and expensive churches popping up all the time in the suburbs around our community for the growth of ministries in mainstream America, and yet there is such a void to be found in the Spirit of charity and sacrifice towards those who really need it. You spoke the truth when you said "changing the world starts by changing yourself." Loving the sinner and not the self-righteous, what a wonderful concept. I can't say enough good things about this hub. Keep up the fight! Peace.
Hello My friend. Someone said, "For those who refuse to believe, no proof will every be sufficient."
Nits will be picked regardless.
The sermon on the mount is interesting. Jesus starts by saying "Let your light shine so they may see your good works and glorify your Father in Heaven." ...
Then, a couple of chapters later, in the same sermon he says:
"Do not do your good works before men to be seen by them, for you will have your reward."
The only difference between the first group and the second group is motivation. One is doing good to please God. Another is doing good to please men.
May those who see the work presented here, glorify God.
AS - good hub in raising awareness around the plight of children...i work with a group that is not faith based - kids (families) living in poverty in Canada...we try to stay away from any one political or religious group...i get many different faith based groups involved in various ways however to help out...I just don't focus on one religion....and for me it doesn't matter what the faith is......just people wanting to help.....
The info. on Manilla was good..eye opening for sure.....I've been wanting to go and help out in other ways and have thought about going to another country for a while now....there's help needed here though....
I don't do this work for the top pay of course...'cause it's not....I'm actually an accountant by profession....I just love this kind of work....just makes sense to me to somehow make a difference....sometimes I struggle with it because I never get to put on rose coloured glasses for very long....
The minister in the hub reminds me of a man i know - Rev Al....he's an amazing person....he gives all of himself to working with the homeless.....i'm not sure what religion he belongs to....it doesn't matter......
This is a sad commentary illustrating the needs of communities being overlooked and ignored by the larger Christian community.
Thanks for sharing and may God continue to bless Metro Ministries.
Forever His,
John,
I'm glad I saw this Hub. I know Bill Wilson. I'm also glad I saw this Hub because the average socalled wanna Christian is a complacent whiney joker who hides behind some excuse when it comes to reaching out to the needy.
I have a reputation of being hardcore and I do not personally care anymore of what these crybabies have to say as it is all they do. Talk.
Every single dime that comes into our ministry goes straight out to the homeless and those who society has ostracized. I could easily fill this comment section if I chose to run down what we do daily in keeping with the vision of improving the quality of life for others.
It ain't about me. It's about the glory of God and doing what God says we should be doing. When we raise funds it is for food, clothing, blankets and homes for those we meet on the street. We also have a large referral program which insures safe quality housing for those we cannot house ourselves. The socalled flag-waving bureaucrats don't see fit to help us, so we do it ourselves.
If any of these socalled "Children of God" who read this could step up, it would make a difference. Will they? Who knows. It's easy to sit behind a computer and act like you the next incarnation of the Apostle Paul, Jesus Christ and all those. It's another to really step out of your comfort zone and get it done.
John, thank you. HubScores don't mean squat. I never made a dime from any of my Hubs and I couldn't care less if I ever do.
Today's wannabes have two choices. Step up or step off. If you gonna talk about it then be about it.

Hi Josephine Javed,
HubPages is a writers site, and normally folk do not post these requests on it, however, as the author of the article I will let this stay published and maybe someone will be able to respond.
Metro Ministries do have an outreach in India as well, and I would suggest that you contact them directly.
