Care packages for students

This will be the first year that my son has spent away from home during Christmas, it had to happen sometime, well now's that time!

Anyhow, with him being the other side of the world in New York and me in Penang, getting a gift idea for him is kind of difficult.... sending him something from here is too expensive, the postage would be more than the cost of a gift (Ok I don't spend a lot, call me a miser, call me poor, but just call me!...) apologies, that's an old Jewish mothers joke!

Looking around I came up with some ideas, and as they are all available from Amazon, I can shop here and they will deliver there.... perfect!

So, what did I find?

Jaime works for a charity, so he is always on a tight budget and small luxuries or goodies come few and far between, so first though was a care pack....

OK I know he's never going to starve in New York, but hey, some goodies would be much appreciated ( I hope) and I can send then over the next few weeks, or wish list them and send them in one splurge in time for Christmas.

My choice for a young man spending his first Christmas away from home?

Well my starter may be the goodies box that will keep him sustained during those long hours spent watching TV... do they do that now days?, anyhow it's chocked full of things he will not buy himself, so why not?

Table Topics looks fun to keep conversation active, yep, that's in Santa's sack!

Next would be controversial, for he is not a drinker, but hey who knows who is reading this, so buy a personal breathalyser and test yourself before you get in the car to drive home, even better test your driver!

Better safe than dead!

Then we come to my personal favorites, the Stieg Larsson series which captivated me and all my friends recently.

These three books are absolute must haves in your library, whether you are male or female you will enjoy them, and they will challenge you as well as keep you reading, real page turners with a great central character, anyway GET THEM ALL you will never regret it...

Unless you happen to be a corrupt bloated capitalist who enjoys abusing women!

Of course my son is from the generation that do not read, so maybe he would want them on Kindle so that he thought he was online!

One of my favourite film lines was in 'The Princess Bride' (a great film I trot out every Christmas ) when Peter Falk's character (playing a grandfather ) is asked by his grandson 'what's a book' and replys "It's what we had before television"....

Good news.... Amazon sell Kindles and films as well, so there is no excuse, have a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

What do you mean I'm two months early (I wrote this in November ) you should see the Phillipines at this time, I was there in late September and they were playing Christmas Carols.... I jest you not!

Besides we all need to shop early for Christmas!

Get reading, modern style!

...and just for fun!

Hi Dusty, all's well here, and Jaime is thriving in NY! so he's not home for Christmas, but may visit for Chinese New Year in February!!

When you have a nine year old girl, you need to practise the holidays!

But get some good bud or cacti and chill out!

Hope you are well...?

Aquasilver...I have a gift you can give him...a connection...my daughter lives in NY...if he is at all into biking or running she is in groups that do both...and he can make some new great friends...she is part of a group called the Bridgerunners, and I am sure they would welcome him if he was interested.

Thanks EL, I'll pass that onward, but he works for Metro Ministries and is busy pretty much 24/7 as far as I understand, and of course the weekends are their busiest times, what with house visits Saturday and two children's services to manage Sunday!

He gets Mondays off... when do they meet?

Hi Mickey. I'm with 50C also, never felt much like celebrating Saturnalia either, but kids..... they love it, besides I hear (my first year here) that Christmas starts in Penang on Thanksgiving and ends for Chinese New Year!, so it looks like things will be buzzing here for the next couple of months!

Well, looks like it's that time of year, again. Is your son still in NYC?

Now at the end of October, Christmas carols and decorations have been out and about for weeks. When I first came to the Philippines, I was pleasantly shocked at 3pm in a major department store for everyone to bow their heads as the public address system piped a daily prayer. Not politically correct in the United States. Alas!

Yep Carl, a whole year spun round and we are still here!

We ended up having our son visit (albeit in January) but I hear this year he is off to a bible conference over Christmas, the boy has so much devotion it shames me!
